The Conners really did kill off Roseanne's character the way she said they would

[Note: This article contains spoilers for the season premiere of The Conners.] Tonight saw ABC air the series premiere of The Conners, a.k.a. “What You Get When The Star Of Your Most Successful New Sitcom Does A Bunch Of Shit That Forces You To Fire Them, The Show” But while Roseanne Barr has been well-and-truly excised from the series that once bore her name—with ABC making it clear that she won’t profit in any way from the “spin-off” series—she may have still gotten something approximating the last laugh. About a month ago, Barr appeared on an internet chat show, announcing how disappointed she was in the way ABC had decided to kill Roseanne Conner off: An opioid overdose, building off a plotline that gradually built up through Roseanne’s last season, in which Roseanne developed a gradually worsening addition to pain pills after knee surgery. 'The Conners' teaser promo: What does 'Roseanne' look like without Roseanne Barr?

The first promo for  The Conners  shows that life will go on without  Roseanne . ABC’s new  Roseanne  spinoff reunites the whole family, with the notable exception of  Roseanne Barr  (who played the title character in the classic ’90s  Roseanne  sitcom and in last year’s nine-episode revival). With their matriarch gone — reportedly  dead from an opioid overdose , though ABC has not confirmed this — her sister Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) appears to be stepping in as head of the family. How Roseanne’s husband, Dan (John Goodman), feels about this isn’t revealed in the promo, but longtime fans might have a guess. In the preview video, Jackie and Roseanne’s younger daughter, Darlene (Sara Gilbert), discuss budgeting for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. “ I say we follow the Conner tradition: Spend every dime we have on Halloween, and then we have nothing to be thankful for or buy gifts with,”  Darlene suggests.
