‘Very Possible’ LA County Sees At Least One Coronavirus Case: Health Official

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA)  — Despite an outbreak of a coronavirus in China that has been linked to 17 deaths, Los Angeles County public health officials Wednesday stressed that while it’s “very possible” the area will see at least one patient, there were currently no known cases in the county. Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the Department of Public Health, said given the number of people traveling between the Southland and China, the county remains prepared to respond to any cases that may emerge. “There is no need to exclude from the public any folks who have traveled to and from Wuhan city unless they’re symptomatic,” Ferrer said. “I know concerns have been raised about whether people need to be isolated during what’s an unknown incubation period, but at this point the guidance is clear that unless you’re symptomatic you should continue with your daily activities.” As of Jan. 21, there was  one confirmed U.S. case  of 2019 novel coronavirus, a resident in Washington state w

By Tara Parker-Pope - NY Times That simple question is the basis for a burgeoning new area of psychological research called self-compassion — how kindly people view themselves. People who find it easy to be supportive and understanding to others, it turns out, often score surprisingly low on self-compassion tests, berating themselves for perceived failures like being overweight or not exercising. The research suggests that giving ourselves a break and accepting our imperfections may be the first step toward better health. People who score high on tests of self-compassion have less depression and anxiety and tend to be happier and more optimistic. Preliminary data suggest that self-compassion can even influence how much we eat and may help some people lose weight. This idea does seem at odds with the advice
