Why The Charmed Reboot Pilot Is Worse Than The Original

Nostalgia can often make us view older TV shows through rose-tinted glasses, but the original 1998 pilot episode of Charmed really does hold up, especially when compared to the pilot episode of The CW's recent reboot . Both shows focus on a trio of sisters - the Halliwells in the original show, and the Vera/Vaughn family in the reboot - who discover that they are witches with powerful abilities and a grand destiny. The original show ran for eight seasons and starred Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano (with Rose McGowan joining later), while the new reboot stars Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffery as Macy, Mel and Maggie , respectively. The road to the reboot's premiere wasn't entirely smooth, with Combs commenting that while she appreciated the new opportunities creates by the show, she couldn't see what was "fierce, funny, or feminist in creating a show that basically says the original actresses are too old to do a job they did 12...

Charmed premiere recap: 'This isn’t a witch hunt, this is a reckoning'

“This isn’t a witch hunt, this is a reckoning,” Marisol Vera (Valerie Cruz) says in the opening minutes of the CW’s much-talked-about Charmed reboot, which premieres with a very topical #MeToo episode. Marisol is on the phone having a heated exchange regarding a professor who’s protesting his sexual harassment suspension. When her daughter’s, Mel ( Melonie Diaz ) and Maggie ( Sarah Jeffery ), hear her arguing, they pause their argument over Mel’s boots and Maggie’s desire to join a sorority to see if their mom’s okay. The sisters make half-hearted promises to have each other’s back before taking off, Mel to see her girlfriend and Maggie to a sorority party. At home, Marisol senses something’s wrong and seconds later, a crow bursts through her open ...

Developed by Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman along with fellow Jane writer-producers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin, the new version adds some very 2018 buzzwords and casts women of color as its lead characters, but the core of the show remains the same: Following the death of their mother (or grandmother in the original), three adult sisters discover that they’re the “Charmed Ones,” destined to be the greatest witches in history, using the “Power of Three” to fight the forces of evil. At first, there are only two sisters: Brash, outspoken Mel (Melonie Diaz) is a women’s studies graduate student and teaching assistant at Hilltowne University, where her mother is the chair of the women’s studi...
