With no host for the first time in 30 years, the plan for the Oscars sounds kind of weird

#Oscars #AcademyAwards The last time the Oscars went ahead with no host was in the late 80s. In lieu of a single overarching presenter, producer Allan Carr and director Jeff Margolis gave viewers an 11-minute musical number by way of an opener. Actor Rob Lowe did a widely panned version of Proud Mary with Snow White, of all things, and the overall production has been described in some circles as responsible for ruining Carr’s career. Maybe the next time around will be different. We’ll certainly know soon enough, as the Oscars seem poised to try to go in that direction — without a host — once again, according to a new report in Variety. “As it stands,” the publication reports, “no new offers are out, nor are any expected to be made to a single potential host to fill the void left by Kevin Hart, who dropped out within hours of being selected when he refused to apologize for his past homophobic remarks that had resurfaced on Twitter.” Variety goes on to note that, barring some las

Kevin Hart Steps Down as Oscar Host

Wednesday afternoon, comedian #KevinHart was announced as the host for the upcoming 91st annual #AcademyAwards. By Thursday night, he had stepped down. The turn of events followed outcry over previous anti-gay tweets, and comments Hart made during stand-up routines nearly 10 years ago. Some of the tweets were feverishly deleted throughout the day on Thursday, leading to an Instragram video from the comedian that only made matters worse for him. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past. — Kevin Hart (@KevinHart4real) December 7, 2018 “My team calls me, ‘Oh my God, Kevin, everyone’s upset by tweets you did years ago,'” he said in that video. “Guys, I’m nearly 40 years old. If you don’t believe that people change, grow, evolve as the

Oscars Drops 'Popular Film' Category

Don't think of it as a reversal. Think of it as the first act of a movie in which the lead — an incredibly attractive, symmetrically faced character — is up against seemingly insurmountable odds. Except in this version, that handsome-yet-relatable hero is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The challenge it faces is trying to make the sluggish annual Oscar ceremony a bit more lively. Only, it's meeting a lot of resistance. On Wednesday, the Academy announced in a statement that it is dropping the widely criticized "popular film" category it introduced less than a month ago from the 2019 awards, saying it has determined the award "merits further study." "There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members," Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in the statement. The new category was panned by members and the public, who complained the chang
