Rain will bring much-needed relief to California fires, but also new dangers

For the first time since the #CampFire started its deadly rampage 11 days ago, #Firefighters will get a big assist from #Rain. The 4 to 6 inches expected later this week will help suppress an inferno that has already killed at least 77 people. It'll also finally improve the heavily polluted and unhealthy air smothering Northern California. But there's a catch: With more than 150,000 acres of newly scorched earth, there's little vegetation to soak up the rain. That means the region is now at risk of mudslides, which could be especially dangerous for firefighters battling the inferno. "They're having to fight this fire right now in the mountainous areas -- the ravines, the canyons, very steep, rugged terrain," said Scott McLean, deputy chief for Cal Fire -- the state's forestry and fire protection agency. "They're back there on dirt roads, dirt trails, trying to fight this fire. Now it's going to turn into mud, which will be another haz

Trump departs for California as wildfire death toll rises

President Trump left Washington, D.C., Saturday morning for California after the death toll from California's Camp Fire climbed to 71 and the number of people unaccounted for jumped to more than 1,000. Mr. Trump is set to visit Northern California, where the destructive Camp Fire is raging. Gov. Jerry Brown and Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom, both Democrats, have welcomed Mr. Trump's visit, declaring it's time "to pull together for the people of California." They will join Mr. Trump on his visit, according to the governor's office, although details of Mr. Trump's itinerary were not released as of Saturday morning. Earlier this week, Mr. Trump threatened to cut off federal payments to California in a post on Twitter. "There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests.

Katy Perry, John Legend & Hollywood blasts Trump over 'demented' tweet about California wildfires

Numerous celebrities slammed President Trump on social media after he blamed the fast-growing wildfires in California on mismanagement by state officials and threatened to withdraw federal funding. "There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor," Trump said on Twitter early Saturday morning. "Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!” he continued. Shortly after his remarks, Katy Perry, Sarah Silverman, Ava DuVernay and other Hollywood stars took to Twitter to rail against the president. “This is an absolutely heartless response,” Perry said on Twitter. “There aren’t even politics involved. Just good American families losing their homes as you tweet, evacuating into shelters.” This is an absolutely heartless response. There aren’t even politics involved. Just go
