Burning Man organizers stress the importance of consent

#MeToo #BurningMan #BurningManCulture #Burners RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Me Too movement is making its way to Burning Man. Organizers are reminding attendees that just because the counter-culture festival in the Nevada desert is known for occasional nudity and kinky landmarks like the "Orgy Dome," it doesn't mean it's a free-for-all when it comes to touching or nonconsensual sex, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported. This year's event started this weekend. While the festival doesn't have official guidelines, it does have a set of informal rules. Tex Allen, a 13-year Burner, doubts many newcomers to the playa are reading those. The festival's on-site Sexual Assault Services department receives five and 20 reports of alleged sexual assault each year, said Burning Man spokesman Jim Graham. Many of those reports involve leering or grabbing, which aren't considered sexual assault under Nevada law. A few reports each year require involvement from la...

How Burning Man Has Evolved Over Three Decades

#Burners #BurningMan #BlackRockCity #BurningManCulture A dust storm overwhelmed the road to Burning Man this week. Clouds of  billowing white dust  obscured the caravan of cars snaking through the barren Nevada desert, according to  recent news reports . Travelers parked in ditches and covered their faces with kerchiefs until the squall passed. The drive is an August ritual for more than 70,000 attendees who have descended upon Black Rock City for nearly three decades and are gathered this week to build colossal art installations and dance nude in the scorching summer heat. (You can  watch it live  here.) First came  the artist hippies  in the 1990s. Insanely rich tech moguls  arrived on their private jets  two decades later. Models and celebrities followed. Last year,  politics seeped into  the parade of whirligigs and hat-festooned cyclists when a group of President Trump impersonators arrived, and booths were set up fo...

Burning Man: The Man Burns 2018

Mutant cars from all over Black Rock City formed an outer ring around the towering effigy of the Man at Burning Man 2018 -- from the USS Nevada clipper ship to the 40-foot-tall marionettes to the Mayan Temple music car. Within the car circle, tens of thousands of people gathered on the playa in a series of smaller circles, waiting to watch the Man burst into flames and collapse to the ground. Rangers and medical staff created a lattice between the spectator circle and impending fires, ready to tackle anyone who might come forward. “If everyone is sitting, we can all see someone running or see that movement,” said a man who goes by “Land Cruiser.” He had attended Burning Man for 11 years and had volunteered as a ranger, the team that provides security, before. Rangers yelled at anyone who stood up and convinced other burners to chant, “If everyone sits, everyone sees.” Security had been stepped up after last year, when Aaron Joel Mitchell, 41, fatally ran into the Burning Man e...
