National HIV Testing Day Doing It My Way

#HIV #LGBTQ #NationalHIVTestingDay June 27 is National HIV Testing Day,  Doing It My Way , a day to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to care and treatment if they have HIV. This year’s theme, Doing It My Way, Testing for HIV, reminds us that each person has their own reasons why they test for HIV and their own unique ways of Doing It. About 1.1 million people in the United States have HIV, and 1 in 7 of them don’t know it. Many people have HIV for years before they get a diagnosis. For those who are living with undiagnosed HIV, testing is the first step in maintaining a healthy life and reducing HIV transmission. CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 gets tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care and those at high risk get tested at least once a year. Some sexually active gay and bisexual men may benefit from more frequent testing (every 3 to 6 months). Knowing your HIV status gives you powerful

How to write good.....

#FrankLVisco #HowToWriteGood #WilliamSafire #Writing How To Write Good (by Frank L. Visco and William Safire) These two sets of rules about writing are engrossing. Do take a look! The first set of rules was written by Frank L. Visco and originally published in the June 1986 issue of Writers' digest. It is available online at Plain Language. My several years in the word game have learnt me several rules: 1. Avoid Alliteration. Always. 2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with. 3. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They’re old hat.) 4. Employ the vernacular. 5. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc. 6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary. 7. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive. 8. Contractions aren't necessary. 9. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos. 10. One should never generalize. 11. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.”

12 Things You Might Not Know About Juneteenth

BY STACY CONRAD JUNE 19, 2018  (UPDATED: MAY 27, 2020) There's more than one Independence Day in the U.S. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, and announced enslaved people were now free. Since then, June 19 has been celebrated as Juneteenth across the nation. Here's what you should know about the historic event and celebration. 1. ENSLAVED PEOPLE HAD ALREADY BEEN EMANCIPATED—THEY JUST DIDN’T KNOW IT. The June 19 announcement came more than two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. So technically, from the Union's perspective, the  250,000 enslaved people  in Texas were already free—but none of them were aware of it, and no one was in a rush to inform them. 2. THERE ARE MANY THEORIES AS TO WHY THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION WASN’T ENFORCED IN TEXAS. Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendering to Union General Ulysses S Grant at the close of the American Civil War, at the Appomattox C

Why Dogs and Humans Love Each Other More Than Anyone Else

#Bark #Canine #Dog #DomesticDog #MansBestFriend   This is excerpted from  TIME How Dogs Think: Inside the Canine Mind , now available at retailers and on  Amazon . You speak dog better than you think you do. You may not be fluent; that would require actually being a dog. But if you went to live in a dogs-only world, you’d be pretty good at understanding what they’re saying. You can tell a nervous yip from a menacing growl, a bark that says  hello  from a bark that says  get lost . You can read the body language that says happy, that says sad, that says tired, that says scared, that says  Please, please, please play with me right now! Think that’s not a big deal? Then answer this: What does a happy bird look like? A sad lion? You don’t know, but dog talk you get. And as with your first human language, you didn’t even have to try to learn it. You grew up in a world in which dogs are everywhere and simply came to understand them. That, by itself, says something about the bond th

Here’s What Happened to Agnes Moorehead Before, During and After Playing Endora on ‘Bewitched’

#Bewitched #AgnesMoorehead #Endora #CitizenKane #DarkPassage #TwillightZone Having a successful  Classic TV  show is oftentimes a double-edged sword, on the one hand securing you a place in the hearts of generations of TV viewers while on the other somehow resulting in people not realizing the many other things a performer may have accomplished in his or her life.  Examples include  Vivian Vance  from  I Love Lucy ,   Maureen McCormick  of  The Brady Bunch  and  William Shatner  of  Star Trek . And then there’s Agnes Moorehead — Endora on  Bewitched  (currently airing on  Antenna TV ) — who had an  extensive  career in radio, movies, on stage and television long before she was cast as Elizabeth Montgomery’s mother on that series. Charles Tranberg , author of the biography  I Love the Illusion: The Life and Career of Agnes Moorehead , relates that while Agnes had been reluctant to sign on to  Bewitched  at first, she came to like playing Endora very much. “It enhanced her career,”

Los Angeles LGBT Center Blasts the Trump Administration for Rolling Back Anti-Discrimination Protections

#TransRights #LGBTQ # AntiDiscrimination #HumanRights Los Angeles LGBT Center Blasts the Trump Administration for Rolling Back Anti-Discrimination Protections and Allowing Health Care Providers to Discriminate Against LGBTQ People LOS ANGELES,  June 12, 2020 —  In response to today’s U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) rule change that attempts to roll back anti-discrimination protections in health care, particularly of LGBTQ people under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO Lorri L. Jean released the following statement: “Access to healthcare is a basic human right. “Today's announcement is part of the Trump Administration's ongoing war on that notion, a continued attack on equality and fairness. That our nation’s government would seek to restrict access to care during a worldwide pandemic is yet another dangerous example of this inhuman assault on human rights. Alarmingly, this r
