Lalah Hathaway - " Tiny Desk " Live Perfomance - NPR

#LalahHathaway #LivePerformance #NPR #R&B #RnB #Soul Lalah Hathaway  comes from royalty: Her late father  Donny Hathaway 's voice was crucial for my generation, setting the bar for inspired, old-school soul singing. But living in that kind of shadow can also be a burden, robbing the offspring of an identity apart from that of the famous parent. The younger Hathaway's appearance behind the Tiny Desk pulls back the curtain a bit for a close-up encounter with her powerfully expressive voice. The lower registers always draw me in, and in "Change Ya Life," Hathaway's dusky contralto paints an exciting portrait of blissful cohabitation — but on her terms. "I'm going to teach you how to treat me like I deserve," she sings, adding, "I'll give you the world." She draws on a tradition of romance and sensuality in the best soul music, but with a feminist twist that eschews old-school, male-centric lyrics and attitudes. Lyrics alone do n

Why Nobody Sang the Beatles Like Aretha

From singing “Eleanor Rigby” in the first person to why “The Long and Winding Road” is the best Beatles cover of all time #ArethaFranklin #QueenofSoul #Respect #Beatles #RnB Aretha Franklin ’s genius took so many forms — as a singer, a songwriter, an album-crafter, a live performer. But the Queen was also one of history’s most audacious Beatle fans. Nobody ever sang  the Beatles  like Aretha. Since she was one of the few Sixties musicians as famous and revered as they were, she felt free to take any approach she pleased to a Fabs song — sometimes radically reworking it, as when she sang “Eleanor Rigby” in the first person. When Aretha sang any song, even a Beatle song, she claimed it as her own — and the Beatles knew it. Nothing could make them prouder than getting one of their songs stolen by the Queen. When Paul McCartney wrote “Let It Be,” he sent an acetate demo to Aretha in hopes she’d record it, knowing full well she’d outsing him on it. (Needless to say, she did.) The Beat

#ArethaFranklin #QueenofSoul #RIP #ISayALittlePrayer #RnB #Soul  The moment I wake up,  Before I put on my makeup I say a little prayer for you,  While combing my hair, now And wondering what dress to wear, now I say a little prayer for you Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart And I will love you Forever, and ever we never will part Oh, how I'll love you Together, together, that's how it must be To live without you Would only be heartbreak for me               I run for the bus, dear While riding I think of us, dear I say a little prayer for you At work I just take time And all through my coffee break-time I say a little prayer for you Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart And I will love you Forever, and ever we never will part Oh, how I'll love you Together, together, that's how it must be To live without you Would only mean heartbreak for me I say a little prayer for you I say a little prayer for you Forever

Tribute to Nancy Wilson, Grammy-Winning Jazz Singer,

#Jazz #RnB #Soul #Vocalist #NancyWilson (1937 – 2018) was a Grammy and Emmy Award-winning singer who sang many styles of music but is most closely associated with jazz. Among her notable recordings are the 1964 hit “(You Don’t Know) How Glad I Am,” and her debut single, “Guess Who I Saw Today.”  Aware of her singing talent from a young age, she transformed her gift for a song into a performing and recording career that spanned more than half a century, beginning in the 1950s and extending until her retirement in the 2010s.   She was described as a consummate entertainer. She made frequent television appearances beginning in the 1960s. She won an Emmy for her series “The Nancy Wilson Show” (1974 – 1975). She also hosted NPR Music’s “Jazz Profiles” documentary series from 1996 through 2005, for which she won a Peabody Award in 2002. She won three Grammys for albums during her career, “How Glad I Am” (1965), “R.S.V.P. (Rare Songs, Very Personal)” (2005), and “Turned to Blue” (200

Rachelle Ferrell - I can explain (Live)

#ICanExplain #RachelleFerrell #RnB #Jazz  Ferrell is a gifted vocalist whose recordings have found her playing two separate roles: contemporary jazz pianist/vocalist and sophisticated R&B chanteuse. The latter style has gained her far more fame, but it's with the former that her fluid, multi-octave voice is free to stretch out. Her unusual scatting puts a fresh spin on a sometimes familiar style. It took a lot of hard work for Ferrell to break out in the Urban and Smooth Jazz markets, but it paid off with the success of 2000's Individuality (Can I Be Me?). To say that the voice of singer, Rachelle Ferrell, is supple would be to understate its magnificence. Ms. Ferrel's voice has a 6-octave range which conveys deep and surprising levels of emotion. Look, I'm telling you With a heavy heart Don't know quite where to start Said that, no one has ever loved me like you do Like you do woo wo woo You treated me Like you just don't care But we both k

[Video] 1968 ABC News Special Report: Aretha Franklin

#1968, #ArethaFranklin #QueenofSoul #RIP #Respect #ABCNews #RnB #Soul Directed by Stephen Fleischman for ABC News, showcases the electrifying Franklin singing gospel in a Detroit Church, rehearsing in the recording studio with her band, performing live in concert and on the Detroit television dance party program "Swing Time". Song highlights include "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman", "Chain of Fools" and of course "Respect". This well-made documentary features some very good live segments of Aretha in performance, receiving an award from Rev. Martin Luther King and onstage with her backup singers and dancers.

Allow Little Richard to provide a few new ways to describe Jimi Hendrix

#JimiHendrix #LittleRichard #RnB #TheKingofRock&Roll While it’s easy to think that just about every superlative in the world has been used to describe Jimi Hendrix’s guitar playing, there are several descriptions that only the world’s most creative minds could think up. Take, for example, a video of The King of Rock and Roll himself, Little Richard, reminiscing about Hendrix’s playing with some deeply impressive, wildly amped-up, Sly and the Family Stone-inflected vocabulary. Pulled from 1973's Jimi Hendrix documentary, Little Richard, in baby blue robe and shiny tiara, waxes poetic about the mid-’60s era when Hendrix was a member of his band, The Upsetters. Richard, with the barely contained energy of a coiled slinky, tells the camera that Hendrix “was a star” when he worked with him. While this is a familiar description of raw talent, he goes a bit further, reminding listeners that “Sly told you that everybody is a star” and that “the only problem is some people

Martha Wash ‎– Carry On (Audio)

#CarryOn #Housemusic #MarthaWash #RnB #Dance #Sylvester #WeatherGirls Martha Elaine Wash (born December 28, 1953) is a two time Grammy nominated American R&B, pop, soul, and house singer and songwriter with a career spanning over thirty years. Wash began her music career as a backing singer for Sylvester.  With fellow backing singer Izora Rhodes, she was half of Two Tons O' Fun, who would later be renamed The Weather Girls. As such, they were responsible for providing much of the firepower behind several of Sylvester's earliest releases often their voices were mixed so that Sylvester was actually the background singer and Wash's and Rhodes's voices were up front. Later, when the Weather Girls disbanded, Wash continued to lend her vocals to various dance and house music tracks. Several of them became massive pop, R&B, and dance hits. She sang lead vocals on all three of Black Box's U.S. top-forty hits, including the top-ten smashes "Everybody
