Apple hints at lackluster holiday as iPhone sales disappoint

Apple iPhone sales appear to have run into a brick wall -- but customers are paying more for the phones they buy. Apple may be grappling with a case of iPhone fatigue -- but it's still getting people to shell out more money for the phones they do buy.  The Cupertino, California, company on Thursday said it didn't sell as many iPhones as analysts expected, and it projected lackluster revenue results for the December quarter. Apple also said it would no longer detail unit sales of its major devices, a reversal from its strategy since first introducing the products. Apple shares dropped about 4 percent on the results and then declined further -- more than 7 percent -- during the company's earnings call after Apple said it would change its reporting structure. On Friday morning, shares were down 6.4 percent to around $207.90.  Apple on Thursday said it sold 46.9 million iPhones in the fiscal fourth quarter that ended Sept. 29, about flat with the 46.7 million sold la

Apple's New iPhones Have An Unfixable Problem

While they hide some great secret features, even Apple has been forced to admit its new iPhone XS (details) and iPhone XS Max (details) were shipped with problems. The good news is Apple fixed most of them, but new tests confirm there is one it can do nothing about… Putting to bed questions about real-world performance, popular YouTube site PhoneBuff enlisted the help of robotics and discovered that for all the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max’s incredible CPU performance, battery life is a mess. Particularly the bigger model. What PhoneBuff discovered is the iPhone XS Max, the largest and most expensive iPhone ever made, couldn’t get close to the battery life longevity of its primary rival: Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9. In fact, when the iPhone XS Max died the Note 9 still had a massive 37% battery life remaining. This is a shock for several reasons. Firstly, while the Galaxy Note 9 has a larger battery, it’s only 20% larger (4,000 mAh vs 3,174 mAh). Secondly, the Note 9 has a higher r

Apple's iPhone XS Has A Serious Problem

I’ve said it before: what  Apple   ’s iPhone XS ( details ) and iPhone XS Max ( details ) get right,  they get very right indeed . But it’s now clear  their biggest weakness  is not just  about saving money  (and making the  iPhone XR look good ), it’s connected a fundamental flaw that may require a recall… In short: many of Apple’s new iPhones refuse to charge. The news comes following a flurry of customer complaints across Apple Support Communities, Reddit, MacRumors forums, Twitter and YouTube. And YouTube’s most popular tech channel has now  shown off  how widespread this is. Speaking to me ahead of publishing, Lewis Hilsenteger - aka Unbox Therapy - told me of “hundreds” of posts detailing a phenomenon whereby the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max won’t charge if they are plugged into a wall charger when in standby. Moreover, some of the phones become frozen and have to be reset. Curious about how widespread this is, Hilsenteger attained eight iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max mode

The Apple Watch stole the show from this year’s new iPhones

The most exciting announcement from Apple’s annual iPhone event on Tuesday was not a set of three new smartphones, but a smartwatch. The  Apple Watch Series 4  — with its rounded corners, larger display, and built-in EKG scanner — became undoubtedly the most sought-after gadget in the aftermath of Apple’s fall hardware refresh. While many people have bemoaned having to choose between the iPhone XS and XR, or are simply forgoing a mobile upgrade entirely, the Series 4 stood out for how simple of a purchase it is for those who’ve been sitting on the sidelines of the wearable market. For those like me who’ve had an older Apple Watch Series 0 or 1, it’s a no-brainer, and it was what I was most excited about when I decided to stay up late last night to claim a midnight order. The disparity is best illustrated by the fact that, after less than half a day of orders, every single tier of iPhone XS available right now has a September 28th to October 5th shipping window. Nearly every model

Apple’s iPhone event will be live streamed on Twitter for the first time

Apple’s iPhone press event will be live streamed on Twitter for the first time, TechCrunch has confirmed. This news backs up  an earlier report  from last month, which claimed Apple would expand the ability to watch the event to Twitter’s platform, instead of only through Safari and Apple TV or Microsoft Edge on Windows 10, as in the past. Many had been  speculating  the event would live stream on Twitter, due to the wording Apple is using in its latest Promoted Tweet about the event. The tweet asks users to sign up for “updates” on event day and follow the action on Twitter via the #AppleEvent hashtag. While Apple has  run Twitter ads before,  including to those that  remind users to tune in and watch , the tweet’s wording this time had hinted that the action may be live streamed on Twitter. Instead of saying “follow” the event on Twitter, the tweet says “… watch  the #AppleEvent live on Twitter.” (Emphasis ours). “Watch” implies a live stream, and the tweet itself featur

Apple's iPhone XS Max Suddenly 'Confirmed'

Apple   AAPL -1.66% ’s  three new iPhones  are nearly here ( one delayed release  aside), and they contain some  genuinely groundbreaking advancements . Furthermore, new leaks have now confirmed Apple’s biggest, most expensive model of them all…   Credit goes to both  BGR  and  9to5Mac  who have both broken the news that Apple will scrap its iPhone ‘Plus’ branding and complement the  recently revealed 5.8-inch ‘iPhone XS’  with a 6.5-inch beast called the ‘iPhone XS Max’. And its price will turn heads. iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max renders based on official leaked images CONCEPTSIPHONE Interestingly, both sites reference a pair of sources “familiar with Apple’s marketing plans” (presumably there’s some overlap) and the duo - which have strong track records with their exclusives - are convinced the information is rock solid. The move is surprising given Apple has been condensing its brands under a single name for different sizes (iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, Apple Watch)
