PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY SARAH ROGERS/THE DAILY BEAST Disney acolytes and Zendaya fans alike got quite the surprise earlier this week, when  rumors  surfaced that the former child star and Disney darling had been offered the lead role of Ariel in the upcoming live-action adaptation of  The Little Mermaid.  The original report implies that casting Zendaya could be a major step for inclusivity in Disney films—since Zendaya is biracial, it’s likely that other actors of color would be cast to play members of her mer-family.
