'The Conners' teaser promo: What does 'Roseanne' look like without Roseanne Barr?

The first promo for The Conners shows that life will go on without Roseanne. ABC’s new Roseanne spinoff reunites the whole family, with the notable exception of Roseanne Barr (who played the title character in the classic ’90s Roseanne sitcom and in last year’s nine-episode revival). With their matriarch gone — reportedly dead from an opioid overdose, though ABC has not confirmed this — her sister Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) appears to be stepping in as head of the family. How Roseanne’s husband, Dan (John Goodman), feels about this isn’t revealed in the promo, but longtime fans might have a guess.

In the preview video, Jackie and Roseanne’s younger daughter, Darlene (Sara Gilbert), discuss budgeting for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. “I say we follow the Conner tradition: Spend every dime we have on Halloween, and then we have nothing to be thankful for or buy gifts with,” Darlene suggests.

Also briefly visible in the clip is new cast member Maya Lynne Robinson, who will be taking over the role of Roseanne’s African-American daughter-in-law, Geena, from Xosha Roquemore.
ABC canceled its 2018 Roseanne revival in May after Barr tweeted racist remarks about President Barack Obama’s former adviser Valerie Jarrett. In June, the network announced a series order for The Conners, following a settlement with Barr in which she agreed to have no financial or creative involvement.
The Conners premieres Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Why Christopher Reeve's ''Superman' Is So Hard to Leave in the Past

#ChristopherReeve #Clarkkent #DCcomics #LoisLane #RichardDonner #Superman Forty years ago, Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve made a Superhero film that directors have been chasing for years, depicting who America was then — or at least who we wished to be Superman. It’s now easy to believe a man can fly. It wasn’t in 1978, but today, in midst of an explosion of superhero movies, it’s a belief we give into with relative ease. Flight is most often the bare minimum of what we expect from heroes and villains who can perform any feat limited only by the human imagination. It’s not simply special effects that permit our belief, but rather an overall acceptance that these costume-clad characters are a defining part of our culture, modern myths at their best and populist cinematic staples akin to the 20th century western at their lowest form. There have been a record nine theatrically released superhero movies based on comic books this year alone, each claiming a major piece of the glo...
