‘Sesame Street’ writer backtracks on claim that Bert and Ernie are gay

#LGBTQ, #Bert&Ernie, #SesameStreet, # MarkSaltzman “Sesame Street” writer Mark Saltzman says his comments that he wrote Bert and Ernie as a gay couple based on his own same-sex relationship were misinterpreted. “As a writer, you just bring what you know into your work,” he told the New York Times on Tuesday. “Somehow, in the uproar, that turned into Bert and Ernie being gay. There is a difference.” He also said that the show should include gay characters, but that they should be humans and not puppets. He also didn’t deny the fact that Bert and Ernie have a deep connection. “They are two guys who love each other,” Saltzman said. “That’s who they are.” Saltzman, who joined the show as a writer in 1984, kicked up a furor when he told Queerty that the relationship between the two puppets was modeled on his own with long-time partner Arnold Glassman. “And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were [gay],” Saltman said in

Grover Drops an F-Bomb on 'Sesame Street' [video]

Grover may have taken his "blue" schtick a little too far -- because it sounds like the muppet may have dropped an f-bomb on Sesame Street ... or maybe he didn't.  Here's the deal, Grover was talking with another muppet about cameras during a recent episode ... when he made a very excited comment.  Some people think he said, "Move the camera, yes, yes, that sounds like an excellent idea."   Others think he said, "Yes, yes, that’s a f*cking excellent idea." So, is Grover's mouth dirtier than Oscar the Grouch's trash can? Or are people with dirty minds just hearing what they WANT to hear, instead of what Grover actually said? It's just like the "Yanny" vs. "Laurel" debate all over again ... except this time puppets and kids are involved.  Watch the clip and judge for yourself ...

Here’s why a happy show like ‘Sesame Street’ wanted an ornery character like Oscar the Grouch

#JimHenson #OscartheGrouch #SesameStreet  He’s green, he lives in a trash can and he’s always waking up on the wrong side of the bed. His name is Oscar the Grouch, and even people who watched “Sesame Street” as kids might find him a bit confounding. Why is he green? How did he choose his home? And why’s he in such a bad mood? The answer lies with Caroll Spinney, the performer behind the roles of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, who announced his retirement from the show on Monday after almost 50 years. (Fellow puppeteer Eric Jacobson, who plays Miss Piggy, Grover and Bert will take the reins.) Spinney was introduced to the characters when “Sesame Street” creator Jim Henson called him up in the early 1960s. “[Henson] said, ‘Why don’t you come down to New York and talk about the Muppets?’” Spinney told NPR in 2003. “'I have some characters I want to build. One is a tall, funny-looking bird and the other’s going to be this grouchy character who’s going to live in a pile

Sunny days! USPS to release 'Sesame Street' stamps celebrating beloved show's 50th anniversary

Soon the beloved characters of 'Sesame Street' can literally stick with you, or at least to your letters. People still send those, right? The U.S. Postal Service announced it will release a 'Sesame Street' stamp this year  to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary.  And don't worry. The gang's all here. Sixteen characters will be featured on the stamps including Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster, Elmo and our favorite curmudgeon in a trash can, Oscar the Grouch. The postal service says it plans to reveal more details about an exact release date soon. The stamp is also meant to celebrate the series' role in educating and entertaining children around the world for decades, a valid accomplishment to recognize.  Earlier this month, a study found kids who watch 'Sesame Street' do better in school.
