Okay, What Exactly Is Borderline Personality Disorder?

#Health #MentalHealth #BorderlinePersonalityDisorder #BPD #Psychology  "It's not something I have, it's something I am." That's how Rebecca Bunch, a character on the CW's  Crazy Ex-Girlfriend , played by Rachel Bloom, described herself after being  diagnosed  with  borderline personality disorder  on the show. That hasn't been the only mention of BPD in pop culture recently. In May,  Saturday Night Live 's Pete Davidson took to Instagram Stories to talk about his own experience with BPD—and how, contrary to what some of his critics think, those with borderline personality disorder can maintain successful relationships. "Just because someone has a  mental illness  does not mean they can’t be happy and in a relationship,” he wrote. “It also doesn’t mean that person makes the relationship toxic. I just think it’s f*cked up to  stigmatize people as crazy  and say that they are unable to do stuff that anyone can do. It’s not their fault and

Lady Gaga Reveals to Oprah: ‘I Developed PTSD as a Result of Being Raped’

#OprahWinfrey #LadyGaga #SexualAssaultSurvivors #SexualViolence #MentalHealth Oprah Winfrey  interviewed  Lady Gaga  about mental health to kick off her first national arena tour in five years. The lengthy chat between the singer and the talk show titan, which took place on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is a part of  Oprah’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus tour , presented by Weight Watchers Reimagined. During their hour-long discussion, Oprah and Gaga discussed everything from managing her fibromyalgia to her rumored relationship with  A Star Is Born  co-star Bradley Cooper. On dealing with fibromyalgia, Gaga revealed to Oprah that even during their conversation, she was in “head-to-toe pain.” “What’s interesting about it is that I’ve found through neuropsych research and my relationship with my doctors that fibromyalgia can be treated through mental health therapy,” Gaga told Oprah. “And mental health is a medical condition, it should be treated as a medical c

The Catch-22 of Antidepressants

#Antidepressants #Depression #HealthNews #MentalHealth The catch-22 of antidepressant therapy is the depression that comes from gaining weight on a drug used to stop the depression. Weight gain is, alas, a common side effect of the drugs used to treat depression, fibromyalgia, severe PMS (known as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) and hot flushes. As much as physicians tend to minimize the effects, or protest that patients are gaining weight because they are finally happy and going to restaurants, their patients are protesting. Many are halting their use of these drugs because they cannot stand to live in a body blown up by the overeating generated by the medications. Anna typifies this problem. She had major depression that was intensified by PMS and was prescribed Lexapro. This drug has been used effectively to treat major depression and to relieve severe premenstrual mood changes. It worked -- and left Anna almost 50 pounds heavier after a year. Her psychiatrist claimed

DMAX Foundation wants to know about your stress

#Stress #College #DMAX #MentalHealth #Survey Are you stressed? DMAX Foundation has launched its “Everybody Has Stress Survey.” Tell us what stresses you out, how you cope, and who you talk to about it. Take our survey, and you can find out what others who have already taken the survey think AND you could have a chance to win:  www.dmaxfoundation.org/survey If you feel stressed, you are not alone. According to the American Institute of Stress, 73% of Americans regularly experience psychological symptoms caused by stress. The definition of stress is hard to pin down, but most people associate stress with the negative thoughts and feelings it causes which can result in anxiety, depression, trouble sleeping, anger, and difficulty regulating emotions. What’s worse is that chronic stress can lead to serious chronic auto-immune diseases, hormonal imbalances, and weight gain. And what a cruel cycle this causes, as worry over health is the #3 largest stressor among Americans, after J

A Single Dose of CBD Reset the Brains of People at High Risk of Psychosis

#CBD #Psychosis #MentalHealth #Medicine #Neuroscience #Psychology #Weed P sychosis, a severe mental disorder characterized by a loss of grip on reality,  can include unsettling hallucinations and delusions . As no one’s been able to pin down a single cause of psychosis, it’s been even harder to pin down a treatment. But researchers behind a new JAMA Psychiatry study seem to be on the right track. In the study, they report that they’ve found a way to reset the psychosis-afflicted brain using an unlikely plant: marijuana. Researchers are increasingly finding evidence that the  active components  of marijuana can help ease symptoms in people with  epileptic seizures ,  chronic pain , and  post-traumatic stress disorder , but there’s much to be learned about its relationship to psychosis. The most well-known  cannabinoid  Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol — better known as THC — has  previously been linked  to the development of psychosis  in some people . But in the new  study , the authors

What Kanye West’s Newest Album Says About the State of His Mental Health

#KanyeWest #MentalHealth #JesuisKing Kanye West is known to be a wee bit off-beat. He will often do or say outrageous things. His mental health has been a concern for those that are close to him for a while now. But some are pointing to his new album as a concerning warning sign. Here’s what has people worried about the famous YE.  West has been hosting his Sunday Service for a while now, so it’s not surprising that his newest album is called Jesus is King, or that the tracks all have names like Sweet Jesus, Baptized, and Through the Valley. Lately, West has been fully embracing religion. And when West accepts something, he goes all the way. Consider his comments last year about Donald Trump and Slavery. West made some statements that angered a lot of people, and really alienated him. But instead of backtracking, apologizing or even attempting to explain, West dug in his heels and took it all the way. When he gets set on something, West really takes it to the extreme. Some mig

Psychologists Have Created A League Table Of Scary And Revolting Creatures

#Psychology #MentalHealth #Phobias #Animalphobias #Spider #Snake #Dog You may be best advised not to read this article late at night or before you eat. Psychologists at the National Institute of Mental Health and Charles University in the Czech Republic have surveyed a large sample of non-clinical volunteers to gauge their reaction to 24 creatures that are commonly the source of specific animals phobias. The results, published in the British Journal of Psychology, not only contribute to our understanding of animal phobias but could prove incredibly useful to horror writers. Among the key findings is that spiders were unique in being both intensely fear- and disgust-inducing in equal measure. The researchers said this may be due to their mix of disgusting properties – including their “quirky ‘too-many-legs’ body plan” – combined with the fact they are “…omnipresent in our homes, often lurking in the hidden dark places and capable of fast unpredictable movement.” In other words, t
