RuPaul’s ‘Drag Race’ inspires college course on race, body image

#RuPaul #DragRace #College A full-semester spring course called “RuPaul’s Drag Race and Its Impact” launched this week at the New School in Manhattan. Taught by drag historian Joe E. Jeffreys, the course will study the reality TV hits in the context of contemporary culture — and spill the tea on drag history. Enrolled students can expect a colorful and wide-ranging curriculum. “You might be surprised at the amount of academic writing that has been published focused on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race,’” Jeffreys tells The Post, “I put this class together not only due to my love of drag performance but also to spark serious critical thought and analysis into something many people would poo-poo as not worthy of such deep concern.” Modal Trigger Joe E. Jeffreys fields questions at RuPaul’s Drag Con NYC.The New School The professor says his classes will explore “audience demographics, historicizing the show’s lineage and scrutinizing such concerns as race, ethnicity, aesthetics and body im...

Pearl Claims She Was Banned from 'RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars' in Retribution for Interview Comments

Last week, season seven “Drag Race” runner-up Pearl unintentionally stirred a few pots when she confided to Hey Qween that RuPaul had told her “nothing you say matters unless that camera is rolling.” Pearl now claims that the comments spun off into “incredibly overly dramatized and exaggerated” headlines saying that she’d “dragged” RuPaul, exposing Mama Ru as an elitist who doesn’t care about the up-and-coming queens, when her intent was simply to explain why she’d been aloof on the show. Pearl did use the phrase “so Hollywood, rotted, and gross” (see the clip here): We were filming a segment, just kind of chatting, bantering together. Then the camera went down for a moment, and I turned to RuPaul and said, ‘Oh my god, I just wanna say thank you so much, like, it’s such an honor to be here, such a pleasure to meet you,’ just giving her everything I ever wanted to say. She turned to me and said, ‘Nothing you say matters unless that camera is rolling.’ That broke my spirit, and t...

RuPaul's Drag Race Wins Reality-Competition Emmy for the First Time: 'Love Yourself

Can we get an amen? That's right: RuPaul's Drag Race is officially an Emmy winner, baby! Since the Television Academy added the Outstanding Reality-Competition Series category to the Emmy Awards in 2003, only three shows have ever managed to actually win the damn thing: Perennial winner The Amazing Race (with 10 wins, total), The Voice (with four) and Top Chef (with one). But at the 2018 Emmy Awards on Monday, Sept. 17, that all changed. And in the most fabulous way possible. Beating out all three previous winners, as well as Project Runway and American Ninja Warrior, the VH1 cult hit (which got its start on Logo before jumping to the big leagues only a year ago) took home top honors and host RuPaul—who also won his third consecutive award for Outstanding Host just last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys—took the stage as the crowd at the Microsoft Theater gave him and the entire Drag Race team a standing ovation. "Thank you to the Academy. This is so lovely. We are s...
