Meet the doctor behind Usher and Kelly Clarkson’s weight loss

Kelly Clarkson and Usher both credit Dr. Steven R. Gundry with their weight loss.

Gundry, 68, is the author of “The Plant Paradox,” which supports the theory that lectins — a type of protein found in wheat, beans and potatoes among other foods — are actually dangerous to ingest. Instead, he preaches the importance of eating vegetables including broccoli, Brussels sprouts and avocado and proteins, including tempeh and pressure-cooked legumes. Fruits are also acceptable to eat as long as they are in season.

He started his research nearly 20 years ago after meeting a patient who came to him needing heart surgery. Now, he works with celebrities.

“I work with a number of celebrities who would rather not [have] people know that I work with them,” Gundry told Page Six in a recent interview. “Oftentimes it’s to get people ready for a role in a movie and sometimes it’s because celebrities actually believe it or not like normal people have issues with their health.”

Clarkson has been outspoken about her thyroid issues but has never specified what exactly she suffers from. And while Gundry told us that he hasn’t met the “Stronger” songstress in person, “The Voice” coach often takes to Twitter to support him and his plan.

She even proclaimed just two weeks ago that, “Other fake news that’s going around about me is that I’ve been taking weird pills 4 weight loss or doing weird fad diets. All of this is not true. I ain’t got time 4 all that. I eat the same stuff I always have. It’s all just made w/different flours/sugars/ingredients. #DrGundry [sic].”

“My wife and I were actually driving in the south of France when we got the word that Kelly Clarkson had come out that ‘The Plant Paradox’ had changed her life … and we were actually listening to — she’s on our playlist — we’re listening to a Kelly Clarkson song,” Gundry said. “I’m a big fan of hers. I like her music and I would love to work with her. In fact, I guess she’s got a new TV show coming out and I’d love to be her doctor on her TV show!”

Meanwhile, Gundry told us that he came into contact with Usher under an unusual circumstance while the musician was preparing for his role as Sugar Ray Leonard in 2016’s “Hands of Stone.”

“Sugar Ray told him, ‘You’re too fat to play me!’ And so Usher said, ‘What do you mean I’m too fat?’ He doesn’t have a piece of fat on his body,” Gundry said. “And so he tried everything. He works out about, oh gosh, five or six hours a day. He did a vegan diet. He did a raw vegan diet. He did a gluten-free diet. Nothing was working … well, one of his agents was in New York City visiting a girlfriend’s apartment and on the refrigerator was my two-page list of ‘yes foods and no foods,’ which is famous.”

The agent went on to take the list and gave it to Usher.

“A few months later, I’m in my office in Palm Springs and my assistant gets a call that a Mr. Raymond wants to talk to me,” he said, adding that he never heard of a Mr. Raymond before. Turns out, it was Usher on the other line.

“He says, ‘You know, your diet is the only thing that got me to be Sugar Ray Leonard. I got 20 pounds off of me that I couldn’t get off with anybody … I just want to thank you.'”

Now, the two men are “working on a new project” but Gundry declined to give any inkling as to what it could be.

And they are being sold for $530!  "Crumply, hold-it-all-together tape details a distressed leather sneaker in a retro low profile with a signature sidewall star and a grungy rubber cupsole," the description reads.
