Psych: The Movie Sequel Officially Moving Forward at USA

Fans of the show Psych (dubbed “Psych-Os”) can rejoice as the sequel to Psych: The Movie is officially moving forward at USA Network. The Psych films are continuations of the detective series which ended after eight seasons in 2014.

Created by Steve Franks, Psych follows Shawn Spencer (James Roday), a man with an uncanny ability to observe and deduct. Putting his skills to the test, Shawn frequently calls in tips to the police, which typically just leads to more trouble. That is, until he has no choice but to convince those around him that he's psychic. Also starring Dule Hill as Shawn’s childhood best friend and business partner, as well as Timothy Omundson and Maggie Lawson, the series was given a made-for-TV movie in 2017. Now, a sequel to that film is on its way.

The first made-for-TV film took place three years after Psych's series finale, moving from its Santa Barbara roots to San Francisco. Now, according to TVLine, a sequel to the film is official, revisiting familiar territory being set in Santa Barabara (with filming to take place in Vancouver, Canada). Along with the familiar location, the sequel will also welcome back other original cast members, including Roday, Hill, Lawson, Kirsten Nelson, and Corbin Bernsen. Here is the sequel's official synopsis:

Santa Barbara Police Chief Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) is ambushed on the job and left for dead. In a vintage Psych-style Hitchcockian nod, he begins to see impossible happenings around his recovery clinic. Shawn (Roday) and Gus (Hill) return to Lassie’s side in Santa Barbara and are forced to navigate the personal, the professional, and possibly the supernatural. Separated from their new lives in San Francisco, our heroes find themselves unwelcome in their old stomping grounds as they secretly untangle a twisted case without the benefit of the police, their loved ones, or the quality sourdough bakeries of the Bay Area. What they uncover will change the course of their relationships forever.

With the script penned by Roday, Andy Berman and Franks, there is no doubt the characters and plot line will stay true to the original series. Plans for the sequel have been in development since last year, but production was held up due to Roday’s obligations with ABC’s A Million Little Things and Hill’s attachment to the USA show Suits. After the delay, it seems all those involved with the project are ready to take off running.

In an era of reboots and remakes, it's not uncommon for a film or series to bear little resemblance to its predecessor, aside from its title (see: Baywatch, Charlie's Angels). The creative team behind Psych, on the other hand, has proven that they're not in the nature of rushing production and sacrificing the show's integrity. In fact, the first TV movie made sure to hold production until all of the original cast and creative team was on board. Now, "Psych-Os" can sit back with a glass of sparkling pineapple juice as they await the release of Psych: The Movie 2, as well as other planned sequels that the show's creator says will likely happen.
