“We all know Topgun is a Hal Jordan origin story,” the tweet reads. Of course, Cruise played a fighter pilot in the Tony Scott classic, which coincidentally is also the iconic backstory of Hal Jordan, created by Gil Kane and John Broome.

The Mission: Impossible — Fallout star has been rumored for the role for years, but this week marked the first time any news has broken regarding official talks to take on the mantle. The only question then, is this: What movie would Cruise’s Jordan feature in?
The only Green Lantern film announced to be in development is Green Lantern Corps, a film with a script from Geoff Johns (Green Lantern), David S. Goyer (The Dark Night, Batman v Superman) and Justin Rhodes, but still no director. Should Cruise make his debut in that, it looks like he’ll be joined by a whole group of fellow Green Lanterns, a rivalry which could potentially evoke Top Gun.
Cruise can currently be seen in Mission: Impossible — Fallout. In theaters nationwide, director Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible — Fallout stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, joined by returning actors Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell and Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, with Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, Michelle Monaghan, Alec Baldwin, Sean Harris, Sian Brooke and Frederick Schmidt.
