Black Panther Makes History with SAG Awards Win — Is an Oscar Next?

#SAGAward, #BlackPanther #Marvel

Black Panther is proving to be one of the films to beat this awards season.

The Marvel film took home the statue for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture at Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. It also made history as the first superhero movie to take the award.

Black Panther beat out A Star Is Born, BlacKKKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Crazy Rich Asians.

Chadwick Boseman accepted the honor on behalf of his cast, thanking the director and “genius” Ryan Coogler.

“We all know what it’s like to be told there’s not a screen for you to be featured on, there’s not a stage for you to be featured on,” Boseman said. “We know what it’s like to be the tail and not the head. We know what it’s like to be beneath and not above.”

“And that is what we went to work with every day because we knew, not that we would be around during awards season and that it would make a billion dollars, but we knew we had something special that we wanted to give the world.”

Boseman added, “We knew we could create a world that exemplified a world that we knew we wanted to see. We knew we had something that we wanted to give.”

Also on stage with Boseman was Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Andy Serkis and Danai Gurira.

Since its release, Black Panther has become a full-blown phenomenon, grossing over a billion dollars at the box office and giving the world its first major black superhero.

Last year, Tyra Banks spoke on the importance of the film saying, “We need this movie right now.”
