Oprah Winfrey And Steven Spielberg Are Bringing 'The Color Purple' Musical To The Big Screen

“The Color Purple” is coming back to the big screen…as a musical!

The celebrated Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Alice Walker first made its award-winning big screen debut in 1985. Now, with the help of both Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, the story will return to movie theaters in the form of a musical, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a movie adaptation of the Tony Award-winning stage musical. The film is still in early development and has yet to have a director, writers or actors attached to it. Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders, who produced the Broadway musical, are also on board.

“We’re really excited to create a film that translates the heart and emotion we found in telling this generational story on stage,” Sanders told The Hollywood Reporter. “This is an incredibly powerful drama that needs to be shared.”

Spielberg produced and directed the 1985 film. Oprah and Whoopi Goldberg earned Oscar nominations. The film, however, was shut out from its 11 Oscar nominations.

In 2005, the musical debuted on Broadway, earning 11 Tony nominations. The 2016 revival won two Tony awards.

We are looking forward to this next iteration of a classic!
