DC has renewed its original show Titans for a second season


DC Universe premiered the first two episodes of its original show Titans last night at New York Comic Con, and while the show won’t officially launch on the streaming platform until October 12th, the company announced that it has already renewed the show for a second season.
Titans is the first of several live-action TV shows that DC will launch on its new streaming service. A darker take on the classic Teen Titans superhero team, it follows Dick Greyson and Raven as they team up with Starfire and Beast Boy to foil a plot that threatens the world. The show is a big part of the recently launched streaming service, which pulls together a large catalog of the company’s offerings, from comic books to classic films and television shows as well as discussion forums and a slew of original productions that will live on the service. Comicbook.com notes that fan reactions to the first couple of episodes were positive: those at the theater described it as fantastic and dark and a good start to the service’s offerings.
DC’s renewal speaks to the high hopes that it has for the show to entice subscribers to its platform. Virtually every streaming service has begun to invest in original content offerings, from the yet-to-be-released like Apple and Disney platforms to established platforms like Amazon and Netflix and even to more modest efforts like Stargate Command.
DC Universe has a slew of shows coming out in the next year: live-action adaptations of Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, Stargirl, and animated shows like Young Justice and Harley Quinn. At San Diego Comic-Con this summer, the company noted that it will be able to release a new episode from its original shows each week, a pace that will encourage subscribers to use the service frequently. The quality and reception of those shows will be critical in retaining those subscribers.
In addition to revealing that Titans will get a second season, DC made a couple of additional announcements: it released a very meta teaser for its upcoming animated show about Harley Quinn (which is set to be released sometime in spring 2019). It also revealed that Syfy’s show Krypton will arrive on the streaming service in 2019.
