Public Outcry Saves Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Vital STD and HIV Services With Temporary Funding Agreement

#LALGBTCenter #DrBarbaraFerrer #HIV #STD #Funding #LADepartmentofPublicHealth Community speaks, County responds…for now LOS ANGELES, January 28, 2020 —Today, the Los Angeles LGBT Center announces that it has reached a temporary agreement with the Los Angeles Department of Public Health (DPH) to reinstate funding for vital STD and HIV services for the LGBT community. The agreement, reached overnight, comes one day after the announcement that free STD and HIV testing and STD treatment funded by the County would end at the Center due to funding cuts by DPH. The subsequent public outcry and activism through phone calls to DPH and its director, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, led to the temporary funding agreement. “The Los Angeles LGBT community saved the day. From phone calls to tweets and emails, their voices were heard and ultimately saved these vital services for our community,” said Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO Lorri L. Jean. “It’s a potent reminder of the strength, tenacity, and r

Taylor Swift skipped the Grammys because they couldn’t guarantee she’d win

#TaylorSwift #62ndAnnualGrammyAwards #Grammys Music insiders say the real reason  Taylor Swift  didn’t go to the  Grammys  is they wouldn’t guarantee she’d win Song of the Year. Multiple sources have confirmed to Page Six that Swift’s team talked to show bigwigs a few days before the live event and said that Swift would only attend and perform if she was to win a big Grammy. But Swift’s team was told the winners are not known to those planning the show, and they would not bend the rules for her. “[Her team] called and wanted to be assured that she would win the Grammy. And while it wasn’t an explicit demand, they certainly were fishing to find out if Taylor was a winner. It was understood in the conversation that if she’s not winning, she’s not coming to the Grammys,” one insider said. Another music insider said, “It’s widely known in the industry that [Swift’s team] called to find out if she was getting a Grammy, they wouldn’t tell her, so she didn’t go. It’s not uncommon

Kanye West Has Ridiculous Advice for College Students

#KanyeWest #College #CollegeStudents #Advice If we had to count on two hands how many  times Kanye West said something  a little off the wall, we’d run out of fingers pretty quickly. Remember when  West tried to give David Letterman  political advice, only to then admit he’d never voted a day in his life? Or maybe you’re still stung by the time he said he was  50% more influential than Pablo Picasso . West recently offered advice  to college students, we had to dive in and find out just what he had to say. After all, inspiring students on life, dreams, and career is a noble endeavor. There’s no way he’d say something ridiculous in such a setting – or would he? A captive audience of students West was invited to appear before 12,000 students during the ‘Strength to Stand Conference’ held in Pigeon Forge, TN. This event is an evangelical one, complete with Sunday services, choir performances, and inspirational speakers. The event’s organizer, Scott Dawson, had a last-minut

As the coronavirus spreads, fear is fueling racism and xenophobia

#China  #Coronavirus #Outbreak #Quarantine #Racism #Xenophobia Hong Kong (CNN) On a French newspaper's front page last weekend, big block letters announced "Yellow Alert" next to an image of a Chinese woman wearing a face mask. Another  headline in the same paper  read "New Yellow Peril?" above an article about the ongoing  Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. The headlines drew immediate outrage. Readers accused the paper of using ignorant and offensive language. "Yellow Peril" was an old racist ideology that targeted East Asians in Western countries. The phrase embodies the worst of anti-Asian fears and stereotypes, which have plagued immigrant communities since the first waves of Chinese immigration to the United States began in the 19th century. In the US, government propaganda and pop culture at the time spread wildly racist and inaccurate images of Chinese people as unclean, uncivilized, immoral, and a threat to society. To inv
