San Bernardino Supervisor Curt Hagman  posted a video on social media confirming that a chartered plane would be arriving in the United States this week, arriving in Alaska to refuel, before making its way to Ontario. “We’re prepared for this,” Hagman said in the video. “We’re not at risk whatsoever.” But in a Tuesday even

As Coronavirus Fears Intensify, Effectiveness of Quarantines Is Questioned

#Coronavirus #China #Wuhan #Outbreak #Quarantine WUHAN, China — A top Chinese health official warned on Sunday that the spread of the dangerous new coronavirus, already extraordinarily rapid, is accelerating further, deepening global fears about an illness that has sickened more than 2,700 people worldwide and killed at least 80 people in China. The grim diagnosis came amid concerns that China’s efforts to contain the spread of the disease, despite a lockdown of unprecedented scope affecting 56 million people, may not only have come too late but could even make the situation worse, including by exacerbating shortages of medical supplies. Adding to the growing global alarm, people who are carrying the virus but not showing symptoms may still be able to infect others, according to the Chinese official, Ma Xiaowei, the director of China’s National Health Commission. Such asymptomatic transmissions would make the disease much more difficult to control, as seemingly healthy peo

‘Very Possible’ LA County Sees At Least One Coronavirus Case: Health Official

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA)  — Despite an outbreak of a coronavirus in China that has been linked to 17 deaths, Los Angeles County public health officials Wednesday stressed that while it’s “very possible” the area will see at least one patient, there were currently no known cases in the county. Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the Department of Public Health, said given the number of people traveling between the Southland and China, the county remains prepared to respond to any cases that may emerge. “There is no need to exclude from the public any folks who have traveled to and from Wuhan city unless they’re symptomatic,” Ferrer said. “I know concerns have been raised about whether people need to be isolated during what’s an unknown incubation period, but at this point the guidance is clear that unless you’re symptomatic you should continue with your daily activities.” As of Jan. 21, there was  one confirmed U.S. case  of 2019 novel coronavirus, a resident in Washington state w

New China virus: Cases triple as infection spreads to Beijing and Shanghai

#Coronavirus #China #Outbreak #Virus Chinese authorities have reported 139 new cases of a mysterious virus in two days, marking the first time that the infection has been confirmed in the country outside of Wuhan city. The new cases were identified in the cities of Wuhan, Beijing and Shenzhen. The total number of confirmed cases now exceeds 200, and three have died from the respiratory illness. The World Health Organization (WHO) said the number of cases rose because of "increased searching and testing". The new coronavirus strain first appeared in Wuhan in December and has already spread abroad, with two cases in Thailand and one in Japan. Experts in the UK told the BBC  the number of people infected could still be far greater  than official figures suggest. What's the latest? Authorities in the central Chinese city of Wuhan said 136 new cases had been confirmed over the weekend, and a third person there died from the virus. As of late Sunday,
